[nospaces] [attr="class","tightrope_container"] [attr="class","tightrope_content"] [attr="class","tightrope_b"]take a chance we can dance up in midair Severus Snape was not a very social person, but people tended to fascinate him with how idiotic they could be. Sometimes it was annoying. Sometimes he was curious as to why people allowed these things to happen to them. And then other times… well, people just pissed him off. However, today was the first day of school – the day after the feast, and he was curious as to how people had changed over the summers. He knew they were just as dumb as before, but relationships were things he never really understood. The only one he really ever had, or at least one he considered himself to have, failed miserably at the end of last year. [break][break] He didn’t quite know how to live now he didn’t have Lily. Normally during this time, he and Lily would sit down for breakfast before classes began. Lucky for him, he had his first period free, so he had even more time to brood in the entrance hall. He took a seat in a corner of the hall near the staircase and watched people as they passed. His ears refused to ignore the conversations around him – someone was breaking up with their boyfriend because they met some muggle over the summer. Then there was someone pouting about how they couldn’t be in McGonagall’s Transfiguration class because they only got an ‘A’ on their O.W.L exam. [break][break] Severus had even tried to pull a book out to read, but his eyes were up and refused to focus on the book in front of him. Normally he loved reading his potions books, but he felt empty. Things that seemed fun before seemed to be hard to do, distracted by nothing. He knew he needed to stop wallowing, but he couldn’t seem to stop himself. The wound was too fresh. It happened at the end of the last year – and then they went home. And it was his first summer without her. He felt truly alone, even when he thought coming to Hogwarts would help. Even with his so called ‘friends’ here, he felt even more alone. They were all talking about becoming Death Eaters, and while he planned to do the same, it wasn’t like that was his entire life, and that made things hard talking to some of his classmates as it was the only thing they would ever talk about. [break][break] Severus leaned his head back against the wall behind him and sighed. Cursing under his breath and rolled his neck and closed his eyes for a moment. He ran a hand through his now short hair (as he had it cut over the summer), groaning. “People are dumb…” He finally muttered, trying to convince his head to get up and get something done. The start of term feast was always one of his favorite parts about a new school year aside from watching young students being sorted to their houses. It always made him happy to see new faces being added to Hufflepuff, the house he had been in while in school. Of course he clapped for all of the children being sorted because it felt right to encourage them. They were just kids after all and house didn't really matter in the real world. Here at school it was different, but all of them deserved their chance to be more than their house. At least that's how Auberon felt about it. Regardless the day after always had him on a happy high, wandering the corridors because he didn't expect anyone to need him first day. Though he could be wrong. Greeting students who said hello to him he passed by a lot of first years, some of whom looked absolutely lost. These he gave directions to and pointed in the direction of their classrooms. It could be a lot to get used to on one's first day, especially if the child happened to be Muggleborn. This is what he was doing when he spotted a familiar face. Severus Snape, the teenager he'd treated for injures after a horrific attack last year. It had made him so angry to hear what had happened and be able to do nothing but heal him after the fact. Severus had cut his hair short this year he noticed. Sadly he also looked troubled, which is what had concerned him after last years incident. Unaware of whether the teen had any real friends he had decided to take him under his wing, or at least try to. So with a small hum he diverted his path to stand near where Severus had tucked himself into the corner. With a faint smile on his face he tried to not let worry be shown on his face, unsure whether the young man would take that well. "Severus, welcome back to school. How was your summer?" Trying his best to keep things casual. While he spoke to Severus he searched his pockets for candy and found he actually had an unopened chocolate frog among his goodies. Pulling it out he moved to lean instead on the wall near him, facing the hallway to watch students bustling about. "Chocolate frog?" The poor kid seemed to be having a hard time and it was only the first day. He wondered if there was anything he could do to help him more than just keeping an eye on him and offering him candy. Candy was helpful in cheering some people up, and he certainly enjoyed them when he was feeling down. () ☀

[attr="class","tightrope_container"] [attr="class","tightrope_content"] [attr="class","tightrope_b"]take a chance we can dance up in midair Usually when a certain healer attempted to approach him, he would turn and walk the other way. However, today it seemed he was quite distracted with the idle chatter around him and he hadn't noticed the quiet approach of the adult. Thus, upon hearing the familiar voice of the older male, Severus did everything he could to hold back a groan. There were a lot of things that Severus hated in this world, but the biggest one was anyone knowing his secrets. Auberon Barrows saw him in one of his most vulnerable times, and that was just completely unforgivable in Sev's book. He knew things that could destroy him - his extreme fear of werewolves. Though to be fair before he came face to face with a teenage werewolf during the full moon he didn't think anything of it. Funny how encountering something that scary would leave a lasting impact on a growing teen. Sev cleared his throat and looked to Auberon after just a moment of hesitation. It wasn't like he could use the excuse that he was reading as he was very plainly not reading. He was very plainly brooding in a corner and watching people pass by. "Keep your sweets," Severus said lowly. It wasn't that he didn't like chocolate frogs - in fact he enjoyed them as much as the next guy. However, accepting them from a staff member, let alone one as young as Barrows... Well, he couldn't risk anyone seeing. He was still a boy and wanted to find where he belonged, and therefore he couldn't risk anyone thinking bad of him. Then again, that whole thing with Lily... He supposed that he decided what group he was going to be in that day when he said that word to her. After all, how could anyone forgive one for insulting a friend so badly? Yet, he still didn't feel like he belonged with the others, the only one he ever felt like he belonged with was Lily. He felt like he could be himself around her, but now that was gone and he just had to live without that. He was lost. And it showed with his current expression as his thoughts began to turn that direction. He quickly hid the show of emotion away, tucking it behind the walls in his mind. "The summer, well, went swimmingly. Who would guess that being alone while people go missing would be such a stress reliever." He was quite obviously sarcastic from his tone. He rolled his eyes and readjusted his grip on his book which was now at his side. "Why do you care? There's plenty of others here for you to worry about." Severus's jaw worked, feeling like he had been singled out by the man. Though in his mind he knew that it was likely that the idiot was this intrusive towards everyone who had a horrific accident as he did last year (though truthfully his injuries could have been far worse if Potter hadn't stepped in). Regardless, it was attention Severus was not used to getting from the other adults. Even Slughorn had stopped pestering him after years of ignoring him. It was clear he'd been able to approach without Severus noticing him, which was likely the only reason he'd gotten close to him at all. One didn't need to be a great sorcerer to realize that he was being avoided. Not that Auberon blamed him at all. As a teenager having anyone see you scared really felt world-ending, being vulnerable at this age felt like opening yourself up and Merlin forbid that. His eyes slid to him briefly, meeting Severus's as the teen finally looked up to him. At least he was speaking to him at all considering how hard he had been trying to avoid him completely. "Are you sure? I find them rather amusing, and the cards are nice to collect." Keeping the conversation casual to hopefully allow the teen to relax, he wasn't about to bring up last years incident here in the corridors after all. Life was a hard thing to navigate on one's own. He knew that from experience, it hadn't been to terribly long since he'd been here at school either. Finding one's self was as tricky as the social groups. Honestly he wasn't sure how anyone could get through being a teenager without trouble of some sort. It had taken him to adulthood and job to really just let himself be himself. For a very brief moment he thought he saw how lost the teen was. Just a quick glimpse of emotion he quickly hid. Auberon didn't mention it though he felt for him. Poor kid was doing his best to not let anyone in. Ah yes, the kids who had gone missing. It had been the talk of St. Mungo's as everyone puzzled over how they had disappeared and what the scar meant. "Ha, well, yes I suppose. I wasn't even in the accidental magic or curse removal wings of St. Mungo's and even I heard people asking what it could mean. It made for a busy and slightly stressful summer." It had made for a busy summer. Inquiries had been made and there had been Ministry folk in and out of the hospital. His thoughts broke as Severus asked him why he cared. "Because I'm a caring person." Grinning cheekily at him, what else was he to really say to a question like that. Hardly anyone who went into the Healing profession were not people persons after all. It was different however, the teen seemed angry about it. Embarrassed maybe? It wasn't like he could say anything, the Headmaster had forced him to stay quiet about the whole thing, despite his protests. "I worry for everyone." He said simply, reaching up to tuck a stray bit of his auburn hair behind one ear. "Its a bad habit of mine I suppose, worrying for people. I always have." ☀
